The Day Double Coupons Died in Houston

Ok, this first part is how I cope with the upsetting things in life.
Sing this to the beat of American Pie:
Bye Bye my free Sara Lee Pie
With no doubles and no triples I think I might cry
Kroger will give me face value instead
Come April 13 we all will cry
Singing this will be the day doubles died!

Ok, (sorry, but songs help me cope with depressing news) I wish I didn't have depressing news for you Houston and surronding area residents (yes that means you Galveston and Bryan/College Station, Orange, Clute) but unfortunately I do.

It is the executive decision of Kroger to put a stop to double and triple coupons in Houston and surronding area starting April 13, 2011!  This information came directly from the district office and I can try to answer your questions and concerns.  Those I cannot answer, I will forward to my contacts with hopes of getting answers for you.

Excerpts from Kroger:
With the growing popularity of digital coupons, mobile apps and manufacturers producing coupons valued at more than 50 cents, we feel it’s an ideal time to test out a new money-saving program and discontinue double/triple.  There’s a possibility we may re-introduce double/triple by hosting special shopping events intermittently.

We will still continue to accept coupons at face value. Part of the new policy states there is a limit of one electronic or paper manufacturer coupon per item. The opportunity to stack is no longer available. A digital coupon and manufacturer paper coupon may not be combined on the purchase of a single item. More than 130 digital coupons are available daily at http://www.kroger.com/.

If you have loaded an electronic coupon to your Kroger Plus card, then the digital coupon will apply before the manufacturer paper coupon. A digital coupon cannot be removed from a transaction once redeemed.

I strongly urge you to use your .35 and .50 coupons NOW before doomsday!

Kroger is working to draft a more detailed coupon policy and the instant I hear about it, I will be sure to share it will all of you!  Please leave your comments and I will be more than happy to forward them to Kroger.  You may also want to visit Kroger on their facebook page and share your feelings on this very sad news.

Also, if you would like a wealth of information about Kroger and to join a like minded group of couponers that are upset with these changes. please visit the Kroger Couponers group a fellow couponer (that I admire!) has created.   Join us in our boycott in hopes Kroger will reinstate doubles and triples in our region. Thanks Dealz for the support group <3
We hope to cause a change like the Pampers Dry Max moms did!

Wow, what a disappointment! I guess it's Randalls here I come since they will be the only one who doubles & triples in Houston area (to my knowledge). I hope Kroger rethinks this decision, especially in these difficult times, things like double & triple coupons helps greatly with tight budgets! Thanks for letting us know.

WOW that is depressing and pretty much insures I won't be shopping there unless the item is on sale for a great price or it's a "special coupon day". What a bummer. Well I hope the decision works well for them. They are too expensive without double or triple coupons for me.

Oh no! You announced the end of stacking e-q's with paper q's about three months ago. It caught up with me this week. So..... I guess this announcement will catch up to me in about three months too. OH NO!

That just means I'm less likely to shop at Kroger. That's too bad!

Dear Kroger,
When you discontinue my double and triple coupons, you remove any reason not to shop at HEB or Randalls or Fiesta or SuperTarget or Foodarama or Food Town or Sellers Brothers.
An unhappy Houston customer.

They also changed the gas rewards program this month. It is harder to save on gas. They are the same price as the other stations around me. I have no need to go to kroger to get gas now.

Is there a story that you can link to about this or was it listed on their facebook page? It's not that I don't believe you but I wanted to be able to share it with others and I'm not sure other than to tell them that I read it here. Also, where would you put these comments on their facebook page? Thanks!

Anon, the official word is going to be mailed to Kroger Plus holders in the coming week and it will be official announced in a press release on April 6th. I was told this info on Monday by the VP of sales and marketing for Kroger TX/La at a blogger event sponsored by Kroger and told I could not release this info until April 6th. Today I received a follow up email that stated a could post it to hopefully get the truth out there as opposed to the "erroneous information has been posted on other blog sites and savings forums" (their exact words) Dallas is not to be affected by this change at the time.

to comment on their facebook you can only comment on an existing string

Sorry for my typos, I am as upset as the rest of you but I have had days to work past the crying and grieving and the totally pissed off stage :(

I'm just sick over this. I understand wanting to reform or enforce limits, sure. But doesn't Kroger realize that by doing away with doubles/triples altogether, that they lose almost any edge they have over other stores?

Before I started couponing, I was doing the majority of my shopping at HEB and Walmart. Now I consider Kroger one of my FAVORITE stores to shop for groceries! But with this change, I'll probably only go there for the rare deal here and there. My milk and bread purchases will likely go back to HEB/Walmart. Sad, sad, sad... I'm off to cry over my coupons now. :(

The main reason Kroger had my business was the double/triple. Now there's no incentive to shop there when Walmart will price match and accept coupons at face value. Kroger lost their competive edge and in today's economy, everyone is looking for the most savings. Sadly, Kroger will no longer be that store to offer the savings...VERY sad day!!

Omg they had better not bring that here to Dallas.

I couldn't agree with you all more. My Kroger is a "ghetto store" as my husband and I put it... but I shop there because it's closer than any others, and they double/triple. No more, Kroger. And I'm taking my rx business, too. They'll be sorry!

This is horrible! I have posted on the facebook page and sent them an email. Randalls and Seller bros are the only two stores in Houston that offer coupon incentives. These CEO's have no clue of what effects the average person. They make decisions based on what they deem to be unnecessary and they are clueless to real life.

The only reason I went to kroger was the double/triple.
As it is kroger is far more expensive than buying groceries at walmart or heb. Their sales will definitelt go wayyy down after this.

I hope they don't do this in the D/FW area.

This really sucks, do you happen to have an email address or a snail mail address for the district office for the Houston area? I for one will be emailing and sending snail mails and calling if possible. Getting a good deal on grocery's is how my family survives right now. If that goes away it will not be great for us.

I love your song! You are such a multi-talented person. I actually had it in my head for part of the day: "With no doubles and no triples I think I might cry." Hee.

I think I will cry too. I guess I will look at this as an opportunity to get to know other stores in my area like HEB, Wal-Mart, Target & Randall's. I know I've been in my Kroger a couple of times on Saturday morning when it's been literally "dead", and the cashier will ask me "Did you notice if there were many cars at Wal-Mart when you went by?" At first I thought that was an odd question until she explained the concern of management over who is getting the business in the area...clearly it won't be Kroger after April 13th! I guess time will tell if Kroger will miss my purchases of eggs, milk, bread, fruit, fresh veggies, roasted chickens in the deli, specialty bakery items and fish/salmon. If they miss it, the doubles/triples will return, but by then...I may have found another store (HEB?) that I like better.

I started shopping and LOVING Kroger when I learned how to coupon. People I told would get so excited and go there too. I used to shop HEB for better prices but their coupon policy is unsavory. Kroger had them beat in my book but now with the new Kroger coupon policy I guess I might as well go back to HEB and stop bragging about Kroger to my friends. With food prices on the rise, this news is even more unbearable.

Has anyone posted on FB yet? I don't see any postings about the new coupon policy and just wondering where you do it? Just hoping they are not removing negative posts.

Wait! What is the change with the fuel policy?? That is my only reason for even going near a Krogers...I guess I will have to hit the Randall's fuels stations! I wish HEB had such a program!

THIS SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm seriously going to cry but before I do that I will make one last giant haul to kroger before april 13... Now i must go eat ice cream to make me feel better :(

IF you are looking for a store with d/t coupons you might want to try a FoodFair grocery store if you have one nearby...they are offering it for a limited time. I'm sure this will help a little and prices aren't too high like Kroger's are. I too am very upset about all this but we have to move on and keep searching for better deals elsewhere without compromising our savings!
