RockNLearn Money and Making Change Review and Giveaway

I have to admit I am a child of the computer age and I don't think I could live without them, but I also have to say, computers are making us DUMB! Just the other day, I was at a grocery store purchasing an item tagged with a 50% tag with a regular price of $4.99. The item rang up not on file, so the cashier went to manually put the price in and I KID YOU NOT, pulled out her phone! Yes, apparantly her smartphone is smarter than her, as she had to pull it out and use the calculator to figure out 50% off of $4.99!!!!!!!!! Shameful!

In this day and age, we need to know how to do simple math calculations in our head as well as know how to make change. Our kids are very vulnerable to being taken advantage of if they don't know how to count, make change, and know the value of the money we place in their hands. I think it is NEVER too early to learn these lessons and I have already started teaching my kids the value of money and how to count it back to me.
Sometimes it is difficult to figure out how to explain these lessons to kids and I get nightmares remembering my parents trying to teach me things they had learned so long ago, they took for granted (like counting change, reading or driving).
Lucky again for me, I live in the technology age and there are DVD's that teach these skills!  Rock n Learn has a whole assortment of DVD's to teach anything from nursery rhymes to multiplication.  I was given the opportunity to sample their Money and Making Change  DVD and while I have to say the song is kind of cheesy, the lesson is very easy to follow and is informative.  This dvd not only shows what money looks like and what it is worth, but it provides multiple examples of how to count money, make change or even combine money in multiple ways.  I must admit, even I learned something while watching the DVD.  (Do you know why dimes are the smallest coin in American money?  I do now.)

I think I am going to check out a few of their other titles, like the multiplication DVD.  Another confession, I cheated in elementary school when learning my multiplication tables. I sat near a poster with the answers and never really learned them (shame on me, they should take my math degree away for that :P)
Anyway, right now, you can snag a 25% discount on any title from the Rock N Learn lineup.  The coupon code will be active through December 5th.  I plan on sneaking in a few titles with Christmas and hopefully my kids will learn something in the process (shhh, don't tell them though).
Just use code : SSA25 at checkout on RockNLearn website.

And now, for the giveaway:
One comment per person.  Giveaway will end November 12th.  Winner will receive the Rock N Learn title "Money & Making Change".  Winner will be selected by random.org from all comments.
I want you to answer to following questions in your comment:
1. What title from the RockNLearn website do you think looks most interesting and
2. Do you know why the dime is the smallest coin in America?

Good luck everyone!

Disclosure: I was given a free copy of RocknLearn Money and Making Change to review. I was also offered the opportunity to give a copy away to one reader. I was not compensated in any other way for this post and all opinions are mine.

Im really curious about the best seller one, and I am sorry to say that I don't know why the dime is the smallest coin. I sure would like to win!

The money & making change would be perfect for my daughter. They are just starting to learn this in class & the video would be an excellent way to build on what she is already learning in class. My daughter is dyslexic and repetition is a key component to her learning. We could play this video as many times as it takes for her to "get it".

Wow, I hear about new sites all the time and it still amazes me! I love this site, I want to get the Language videos, as I'm trying to teach my two sons (3 and 1) Spanish. Videos always seem to be more enjoyable than listening to Mom..
Hmm. About the dime - isn't it because the silver that they make it with is more valuable and expensive so they used less than other materials - like copper, etc.? We'll see if my Home-Schooled memory served me right. :)

I am most interested in the Spanish DVD because I'm trying to expose my children to Spanish as much as possible while they are very young.
I read on the internet that the dime is the smallest coin because silver is much more valuable than copper used to make pennies.

Money and Making Change - my grandchildren could really use this one. 2 of them have Aspergers.
i do not know why the dime is the smallest coin.

I would be most interested in the Letter Sounds for my 4 year old. We often have him repeat words that come out kind of funny at times.

The dime is smallest because...well honestly, i googled it, so how far would it be if i copied & pasted??? ;)

I am most interested in the Money, Multiplication and Spanish....looks like so many great titles to choose from!

Since we are in the age of technology, I looked it up on the internet and it is because they were originally made of silver was more costly to make and accordingly, they made them smaller.

I think this title looks reall cool - my kids somehow have no concept of money. I also think DS would have fun with the read aloud stories DVD.

I did know why the dime is the smallest. It is due to the silver content.I think the mercury dimes are the coolest looking ones.

I would enjoy the Spanish or the Money DVD. I believe the dime is smallest because of the silver value.

I think the alphabet exercise DVD looks really interesting. My daughter is into her ABC's right now and loves to copy peoples moves on the TV.
I'm not quite sure why the dime is the smallest coin though.

The phonics DVD's and CD's. I'm trying to get my 4 year old to improve on her letters/sounds and eventually works. I've really slacked off with this 4th child. ;) My other kids knew all their letters when they were 2 and 3. I think the dime is one tenth the size of the silver dollar. The nickle and penny were made out of materials that were not as precious as the Dollar, Half Dollar, Quarter and Dime. So it didn't matter how what size they were.

My favorite title is the Phonics - Easy Readers because I want my kids to experience the joy of creating worlds in their mind.
If I remember correctly, the dime is the smallest coin because the it was originally made from silver (no longer unless you buy silver proof set from mint) and the coins were made based upon value versus the dollar and at the time this size and the amount of silver was 10% of the dollar.

I like the multiplication rock and the word problems - my 4th grade grand daughter is math deficient (political correctness) LOL
and my grand son just stared kindergarden so these will get plenty of use

the dime was the smallest denomination of the silver coin therefore the smallest size - believe they were all silver until the 60's - oh a lot of things changes in the 60's

1)Money and Making Change. Kids really need that

2)I googled it: The U.S. Dime size was arrived at by it's metal content. Exactly 10% of the silver a dollar had in it...so no I didnt know that answer. :P

I would love to have the Spanish copy. As a Assistant Director of a MDO, I would love to introduce the children to another language.

As far as the dime being the smallest.....The reason for this pertains to the metal that was originally used to produce dimes - silver - is much more valuable than copper, the metal originally used for cents.

I have no idea about the dime though.

I like the Letters and Sounds and the Phonics. My 3 year old knows all of the letters, but still gets confused with sounds.

All of the comments about the size of the dime are interesting - I never knew!

I don't know the reason the dime is smaller. I would like any of the telling time or counting money dvds as those always seem to give children a little challenge. Maybe there would be a catchy song to help some kiddos catch on.

I think that the alphabet one looks like fun. Dimes are smaller because they were made with silver which was more valuable.

I think the money one would be great for my first grader but honestly any of the math ones would be great as that even though I come from a family of accountants and math majors and people with masters in math..I suck at math..but luckily thusfar my kid loves math.. I never even thought about the size of the dime..so interesting!

My favorite would be multiplication. My daughter is working on that right now.

The dime is the smallest because of costs to make it, since silver is expensive.

We need the money and making change DVD...my daughter is just starting to learn this is school, and it would help a lot. As for the dime, I don't know, but I believe your other commenters who think it has to do with keeping the cost low since it was originally made of mostly silver.

Wow! I'm adding this to my girls' Christmas Wishlist as I speak! They have so many good things. I think I would find the "Human Body" Dvd the most interesting, but the Alphabet excersize one looks like a good one for my youngest. And I don't know why the dime is so small!

Ruthie said...

The alphabet DVD would be awesome! My daughter is so ready for that!

Interesting to learn about why the dime was smallest. I hadn't every thought about it...

Dana said...

I have 3 nieces and nephews starting school this time...Getting Ready for Kindergarten would be nice!

The dime was to originally represt 1/10th of the dollar bill, making it the smallest US coin.

The Human Body looks most interesting to me and my kids. This is an area that we haven't studied much. I don't know why the dime is smaller, but I will find out!

Money and Making Change looks perfect for my son.
As to why is dime the smallest....i'll have to get back on that one :)

I like the title Alphabet Circus. And as far as the dime I think it has to do with how the coins were originally made - metal for dimes I think and maybe copper for pennies (something like that).

There are lots of fun looking DVDs for kids on their site. I think the Math Word problems would be a great one to own...especially since the TAKS test has lots of those kind of math questions. I am sorry to say I do not know why the dime is the smallest coin...always wondered though.

My kids would really like physical science.
I don't know why the dime is small I would guess because of the cost of silver. Thanks

I would love the money and making change DVD, my 1st grader is having a hard time grasping the money concept. My second pick would be the Spanish DVD though. She is in the 2 way Immersion program at her school and I'm sure that would be a great help. I've never heard of the website, what a great resource!
And, I have no idea why the dime is the smallest!

I think I'd buy the "Getting Ready for Kindergarten" video for my 4yo. His birthday is such that he couldn't start prek this year, but I do want him to have the k skill set once he gets to prek next year.

As for the dime it was originally from the mid 1700's when the size of the coins were linked by their silver content.
