NOTE: There WAS a $2 Zebra writing instrument printable coupon available earlier in the week, so if you got that, you can still use on the scenario above and your total would be $30.01 so still can use the $5 off $30 :D Then you would have a money maker (I didn't print that coupon :( )

I took your list with me to Staples last night. I purchased everything on the list, plus a couple other small items. When I got to the register, the gal talked me into buying one of their "Savings Pass" cards, which costs $10 but will earn me 15% on all purchases.
Tonight I submitted my rebates online and was found out I did not earn the full $8.99 on the photo paper (instead I earned $7.49---they deducted the 15% from the savings pass). And the two packs of multi-purpose paper earned me only $9.88 instead of $11.98.
I did the chat-thing with Staples Rebate center and found out that they deduct what I earned from the Savings Pass. I earned the full $4 each from the pens and pencils, even though the Savings Pass earned me 15% from those purchases also.
Needless to say, I was NOT happy. But when I read the fine print on the rebate redemption form, it does state that the rebate value may differ based on Savings Pass discount. It says that on the form for the paper, but not on the pens & paper.
So the savings pass isn't very beneficial to me because I don't shop at Staples that often. I then called the store and asked them if I could turn in my card and get reimbursement and was told that wasn't possible. But the store manager was very nice and told me she would mail me a $10 gift card instead.
I hope you get the $10 gift card, that does sound like a not so great deal. They tried to upsell me one of those a few weeks ago but I declined because I don't shop there much either, just for the freebies :D
