Texas Renaissance Festival Tickets - A steal pricing 16 HOURS only

The yearly Awesome sale on the Texas Renaissance Festival is once again upon us (starting at 6 AM).  From 6 am to 10 pm today only, you can score insane savings on Ren Fest tickets.  Today only pay $11.95 each(online only) after transactions fees per ticket to any weekend the Tx Ren Fest is open.  Otherwise you are looking at costs of $23.95 for adult pre-purchased at participating retailers or $30 gate price adult tickets or $12.95 for children pre-purchased at participating retailers or $15 gate price childrens tickets for Sunday's.  Saturday's seem to be $1 cheaper but the grammar on the site seems to be confusing so I might be misreading so here is the link the to the info in case I am misreading their placement of periods.  Children 4 and under are always free.

This is AWESOME!  About the only way I can convince my husband to see a girly (or Johnny Depp movie) is to go see it at Alamo Draft House.   Remember the old dinner and a movie days of dating.  Well, Alamo Draft House makes it a one stop event.  Order from a full menu and enjoy some yummy food while the movie plays. The Lone Ranger - It's Movie Review Time!!

This pretty much summarizes the film

Ok. Full disclosure here. I am not the lady that goes around finding deals and building towers of toilet paper. I'm the guy married to her and I went with her to see the advanced screening of The Lone Ranger. It was only after seeing it that she informed me that I'd be writing the review. Because I write good and stuff.

First things first. I am not a professional critic, so I tend to enjoy things for the sake of enjoyment. If you've read the professionals, then you probably have the same opinion of their critiques as I do. "Oh, look... Movie critic Bob Boos said Movie Opens July sucked pickled octopus ink. So it must've been a good show!"

That's right. I just critiqued the critics.

On to My Honest Opinion!

I grew up reading Lone Ranger comics, watching Lone Ranger shows and such. The Lone Ranger was like a mix between Batman and Han Solo. You cannot get any cooler than that. Tonto was his staunch ally and sidekick, perfectly happy to ride in the sidecar.

At first I was happy that this movie didn't follow this trope. It reinvented the Lone Ranger myth and brought the Comanche and their plight of the ever spreading white man front and center. So much so several times during the film I began to wonder if this movie was about TLR or Tonto.

Our hero is not the Batman/Han Solo I remember. He's more of a 1960's Robin/Peter Brady type character. Naive, foolish and completely green. I suppose this is ok given that this is an origin story. Perhaps if Disney springs for a sequel they'll make him more... seasoned.

Tonto is totally the leading character. Depp plays a 20-something Comanche that is totally out for revenge against some pretty evil villains. Way more evil than what appeared in the shows and comic books I experienced. He's also nearly insane which, as we've seen in Depp's past work, is not really a stretch for him.

What I looked for:

A horse that can defy the laws of nature and physics                      Check

Tonto to say, "What do you mean 'we' pale face?"                         Did not happen. This is a good thing.

The William Tell Overture to highlight a playfully short moment       If 20 minutes is playfully short, then check

A silver bullet                                                                                Check

Johnny Depp to carry the film                                                        Check

All in all, I felt that there were some extremely dark moments in the film that simply did not jive with the comical portions. The plot was better developed than I'd anticipated but only in regard to the Tonto character. TLR doesn't have much to look back on I guess.

Do I recommend this film? Well, do you like involved action sequences, trains, magic horses, and explosions? Then yes. I recommend this film for you. If your job is as a movie critic where you compare every film to the greatest movies ever made and spend most of your time disappointed, then no, I do not.

Stephanie's take: I chose to let my husband write this review for a couple reasons.
* As most of you know I LOVE Johnny Depp and tend to get caught up in his acting/character and might not see the forest for the trees
* I did enjoy the film but do agree with my husband that there were some very dark aspects that seemed ill fitted.  I don't want to spoil the film so will not go into details but it just seemed they were trying to portray some accurate accounts of the history of America and would start to get graphic but rush back to humor so as not to make one dwell on negative events.
*The action sequences were wonderful and very entertaining
*I would not recommend taking any children younger than 13 or older to this flick.  There was a mother in front of me that had her younger child (maybe 8-9) and I could tell by his reactions, some parts of the movie upset him
And finally, for those of you with little ones(or little bladders) that beg to go potty but you insist on staying for the credits(Ferris Bueller taught me well), rest assured, you will not miss anything of note by taking them to the bathroom :D

Free Bowling for the Kids- All Summer Long - Also cheap deal for adults!

AMF bowling centers are offering up free bowling for kids this summer.  Just go here to register your kids for a bowling center near you.  Kids 15 and under can bowl for free everyday this summer until 8 pm.  Program runs NOW- Sept 2nd.
If you want to bowl with your kids you can buy a summer pass for just $34.95(a $5 increase from last year).  This pass will pay for you to bowl up to 2 games a day and you can bring up to 3 guests 16 and up!  Shoe rental is not included.

Don't have kids but wanna bowl cheap during the summer, no problem, just go here to sign up for the summer pass.  Just one visit with a few friends and it is better than paid for.

Oh yay!  Early June 2011, I found my husband what I felt was a SMOKIN deal on one of his favorite magazines..............Discover.  I got him a 2 year subscription for $9.99 which is AWESOME (at least in my searching for a cheap price for this!).  Well his renewal is up in June and I have been sweating, but luckily, I was just able to renew his subscription for another 2 years for $9.98!  Whoop!

Houston Children's Festival - April 6-7th

Mark your calendar now so you don't miss the largest children's festival in the United States.
Houston Children's Festival is celebrating it's 25th birthday on April 6-7th from 10:30 am - 6:30 pm in Downtown Houston - City Hall, Houston Public Library Plaza and Tranquility Park.
Tickets are now on sale online for $8 + $1.39 fee or $10 at the gate, under 3 are free or consider an all day fun pass.

The entire festival benefits Child Advocates Inc.  and has so much to do your kids are sure to get worn out.  My sister has taken my kids the past two years and they have had a blast!
There will be celebrity appearances by Victoria Justice on Sunday and Laura Marano on Saturday.  If your kids watch Nickelodeon or Disney at all you should be very familiar with these two (Victorious and Ally from Austin and Ally).

In addition the whole event has 5 stages of music and entertainment, in addition to over 300 activities in the big family adventure zones.
Kids Karoake, bounce house, games and rides, kids crafts, juggling, comedy, face painting, pony rides, and petting zoo are but a small list of what you will find awaiting you.

Free HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Showtime this weekend - multiple providers

Well, I was not too happy to hear it is supposed to rain all weekend UNTIL I stumbled upon the news that this weekend my cable provider will be offering free HBO, Cinemax, Starz and Showtime.  Time to warm up the DVR and record movies I have been wanting to see that are not on Netflix and I am too cheap to pay $1.20 for at RedBox, lol.
Also, might take advantage of some Streaming shows that I keep hearing great things about on those channels.

It states I should be getting all 4 with my provider but as of the typing of this blog post, only Showtime is allowing me to see actual movies.  I have already even set the DVR for a movie I know my hubs might be interested in - Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Undead.  Bonus points for anyone that knows what part of this title references :D

Houston Children's Museum - 50% discount

If you live in Houston and have not had a chance to visit the Children's Museum, you can really make a day of it! There is so much to keep your little ones busy, you might never get them to leave. If you have plans to visit before March 8th, you might want to head over here today to snag a great price on admission.
Today, Groupon is offering a 2 pack of tickets for $9 or a 4 pack for $15 (a savings of 50 or 53% respectively). There is no purchase limit so for those of you with a larger family size, you can get multiples, but each voucher has to be used in a single visit.

Les Miserables Soundtrack - $5

My husband is going to be super excited (insert extreme sarcasm here!) when he hears I picked up the new motion picture soundtrack to Les Miserables for just $5!  He already LOVES (dripping with saracasm now) when I play the broadway soundtrack in his presence.

If you are crazy about Les Miserables too, hurry over here to pick up the soundtrack before the price goes up!  I have my free tickets to this movie (thanks to Banana Republic) and will be watching it over the holiday break :D
